“This is the vision I have…” said the shy voice on the other end of the phone. “A gorgeous blue bird wedding day at the very top of Whistler Blackcomb surrounded by friends and family so they can see the beauty that Rory and I cherish so closely!”.
Then silence. As if waiting for me to bring her back to reality and give her a plan B, just in case. She had been warned by others to consider things like weather, crowds and other potential logistical bumps that come with outdoor mountaintop weddings.
Without a blink of an eye, my answer was, “Let’s do it!”. You see, I’ve hauled my camera gear around in this neck of the woods for quite some time now. And two things are absolute certainties. One, regardless of where a wedding takes place it is never hitch-free (other than the couple of course), glitches can happen in any location. The good news is well selected vendors know how to handle them. And two, if you want an epic outdoor wedding experience filled with inspiration, magic and ‘one-of-a-kind’, the top of the mountain is the way to go. And the crew at Whistler Blackcomb know a thing or two about running the logistical details as seamless as it can be. Throw in a skilled wedding planner and your day has become the best kind, worry free.
And so we did it.
Jesicca and Rory met a long time ago. Their fathers worked together for years and children were invited to every company gathering. Young Jessica and Rory would see each other every so often until one year they started to see each other a little more … and so their story began. Ever since, Whistler has been their weekend oasis. Both avid skiers and adventure junkies, they fell more at home at the top of Whistler Blackcomb then anywhere else so their version of a plan B was synonymous with plan A.
The day started with Jess and her girls getting ready in at the Sundial Boutique Hotel. The atmosphere was relaxed but I could see the excitement in Jessica’s eyes. We had scheduled plenty of time for her to get her hair and makeup done so when the time came to get started with me, she was calm, ready and fed!
Jess had selected this gorgeous gown with a nice open upper back. The details were fabulous.
Ah!!! The boys, always so care free and ready to get the show started. These 5 boys were the kindest and most helpful at rounding everyone up when needed. Plus I don’t think I laughed that hard all summer.
The vision that Jessica & Rory had came to life. The ceremony took place on the balcony of Steeps Restaurant in the Roundhouse at the top of Whistler Mountain. Most of their guests had never experienced the mountain top and they were just blown away. We even had Jessica’s grandmother up there smiling and taking pictures to show her friends later on. What a fantastic moment for their families.
The ceremony was followed by a little cocktail in Steeps with chocolate dipped strawberries and champagne. This bit of down time after their ceremony allowed the couple to visit and receive their congratulations while also letting all the emotions of the moments sink in.
Afterwards guests were invited to explore and enjoy the mountain top and then slowly make their way back into the gondola to head over to the reception.
Photography was at the very top of this couple’s wish list and we made sure there was plenty of time to capture all the images they wanted. Starting on the mountain top, followed by Whistler village and finishing with a quick escape on the backside of the gorgeous golf course at Nicklaus North Golf Course.
When returning to their guests, Jessica & Rory were greeted by a surprise dance from their bridal party that could of easily battled “Lord of the Ring”. Needless to say there was not a dry eye in the entire group from all the laughter.
Jessica had tackled a few DIY projects to add her personal touch to the decor and thanks to Sea to Sky Celebrations, everything looked perfect.
It was a gorgeous day, were you pinch yourself every once in a while to make sure you are fully present to take it all in from the unique setting of the mountains to the joy and love that filled the reception.
Jess and Rory, thank you for including me in such a wonderful celebration, your families were so welcoming. And here is to many encounters on the ski hills!
